Centennial Promotes Michael Platt to EVP of Mixed-Use Development

Real Estate Investment Firm Repositions Top Talent in Wake of Record Growth

DALLAS – October 17, 2023 – Centennial, a retail real estate owner and operator with a national portfolio of shopping, dining, entertainment and mixed-use destinations as well as a full-service property management platform serving third-party owners (www.centennialrec.com), announced today that it has promoted Michael Platt to executive vice president of mixed-use development. In this position, Platt will manage all phases of the development process for Centennial’s owned and managed properties, including entitlements, public-private partnerships, feasibility studies, budgeting and pro forma analysis, design and construction. As head of development, Platt’s significant experience will be instrumental to Centennial, which has experienced record growth over the past two years following the firm’s 2022 acquisition of the Bayer Properties operating platform and the the rapid expansion of its portfolio with its September acquisition of Valencia Town Center and the addition of management contracts for The Shops at North Bridge and Mission Valley earlier this year.

“Today, Centennial owns or operates 24.5 million square feet of mixed-use destinations in 15 states and is quickly expanding its focus on mixed-use developments nationwide,” says Whitney Livingston, president of Centennial. “With his extensive background in mixed-use projects, Michael has one of the top skillsets in the industry as well as the depth of experience needed to execute Centennial’s vision and  help shape the evolving landscape of retail real estate as a whole.”

Based out of Centennial’s corporate office in Dallas, Platt is a senior real estate professional with more than two decades as a developer, architect and designer working in the retail, mixed-use, hospitality and corporate sectors. Prior to his promotion, Platt served as the senior vice president of mixed-use development at Centennial and was actively involved in all phases of development, from initial concept and feasibility studies to design, development and construction. Before joining Centennial in 2021, Platt served as vice president of development and design for Starwood Retail Partners with responsibilities that encompassed the entire 30 million square feet of Starwood’s 30-property portfolio; prior to that, he also served as vice president of design at Westfield, overseeing all facets of design, including concepts, documentation, consultant management and entitlement assistance.

Platt’s depth of experience perfectly positions him to chart Centennial’s course as it transforms the company’s prime real estate assets into dynamic, multi-use, live-work-play destinations that seamlessly and aesthetically combine retail, restaurants, entertainment, luxury living and office space in a single master-planned campus, enhancing the asset as well as shareholder value.

“With multiple mixed-use projects currently underway and several others in pre-development, Centennial is leading the market by actively executing on the types of projects other developers have only been talking about for years,” Platt says. “Centennial has a unique vision for the future of retail real estate, and I am excited to be an integral part of the future of this creative organization as it examines the possibilities for each of the properties in its fast-growing portfolio.”

The addition of a new position, and the promotion of Platt to the Centennial executive team, marks yet another milestone in the way Centennial has adapted to the changing landscape in retail real estate. Today, the company is not only focused on operating a best-in-class operating platform, but it is also focused on the transformation of single-purpose properties into mixed-use master-planned developments. While many developers are talking about mall to mixed-use conversions, Centennial is executing this complex strategy with shovels in the ground and thousands of multifamily units in progress or already leasing nationally. This is a strategy that is paying off for the growing firm.

Armed with best-in-class real estate, a team of experienced redevelopment experts and a proven playbook, Centennial is quickly becoming the industry’s leader in transforming yesterday’s suburban malls into tomorrow’s most dominant mixed-use destinations. Centennial’s unique vision for the future of retail real estate has led to the successful repositioning of retail properties in key markets from coast to coast. With carefully curated in-house property management, marketing, leasing, accounting and development teams, Centennial has built a repertoire of exceptional skills in strategic merchandising, innovative experiential marketing, customized placemaking solutions, community connections and digital solutions that flawlessly merge the physical and digital shopping experience. Through these skillsets, Centennial is perfectly positioned to expand its own portfolio while using its third-party management platform to help other retail real estate owners navigate today’s complex retail market and plan for future value creation.
