“Most American shopping centers were built several decades ago to serve the needs of the consumers of that time. Today, however, what shoppers want has changed,” says Steven Levin, Centennial’s CEO. “Where shopping alone was once the activity that drove people to the mall, today’s consumers want dynamic, immersive experiences. Shopping is still important, but of growing importance today is the experience of being at the mall and spending time creating memories with friends and loved ones there. KidZania is exactly the kind of experiential placemaking we had in mind when we envisioned the changes for MainPlace Mall, and we’re proud to announce that MainPlace will be the very first West Coast KidZania location in the United States.”
The KidZania model is built around kid-size cities that allow them to role-play in realistic simulations like fighting fires, piloting airplanes, acting in plays, designing robots, performing surgery, going on secret missions and more. Consistent with KidZanias around the world, the MainPlace KidZania will include features that reflect its Southern California location, complete with buildings, paved streets, vehicles and an economy fueled by a currency called kidZos.
“At the new MainPlace KidZania, children will have an opportunity to role-play more than 100 professions within an 85,000+-square-foot indoor city designed just for them,” says Greg Stevens, CEO of KidZania USA. “The KidZania experience allows kids to learn about the world of work while building real-life skills like financial literacy, teamwork and problem solving. With the establishment of our MainPlace KidZania, the fourth KidZania location announced in the U.S., we look forward to taking the next step in bringing this innovative learning experience to children, families and educators throughout the nation.”
At MainPlace Mall, children will enter KidZania from the interior of the mall on the second level through an actual 747 airplane, giving them the realism of being transported to a kid-sized city where anything is possible. Within KidZania, children will interact in a safe environment where they can role-play a profession at a hospital, bank, theater, university, restaurant and more.
“We’re very excited that MainPlace has been chosen as the first-ever West Coast location for KidZania,” says Jonathan Maher, Senior General Manager, MainPlace Mall. “We expect as many as 1 million visitors to KidZania annually, with 80 percent of those visitors being new to the mall, so this is going to be an incredible traffic-builder for the shopping center. For our visitors, the addition of KidZania is going to provide an exciting experience that rivals trips to other prominent Southern California attractions. KidZania truly is that big, that impressive, and bringing it to MainPlace Mall is a clear example of the kind of ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking that’s making Centennial a thought leader in the industry as it reimagines the future of retail real estate.”
